Abstract

Sixty-eight patients with group G β-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis were treated at a student health service during a nine-day period. The illness, probably spread among students by respiratory droplet, was indistinguishable from adult group A streptococcal pharyngitis, with a majority of students having exudate, fever, and adenitis. Poor compliance with antibiotic treatment was associated with elevated antistreptolysin o titers and persistently positive throat culture results. Treatment did not affect overall duration of symptomatic illness. (JAMA1982;248:1333-1336)
