Abstract

Ground vibrations, resulting from the utilization of explosives as a cheap source of energy, have become an environmental problem which faces both the mining and construction industries because of the detrimental and damaging effects produced. The prediction equation developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines was useful in predicting the ground vibration levels for a given site with a given blast design and geologic conditions. In the present paper the constants appearing in this formula were analyzed. One constant was related to the geologic conditions and discontinuities, while the other parameter was related to the overall blast design. No exact formula has yet been developed to predict the ground vibration levels for general geologic conditions and general blast design, and the most practical way to predict vibration level is to adapt the scaled distance formula to the site under consideration in order to minimize or alleviate the intensity of ground vibration level caused by blasting.
