Abstract

GROUND corn, wheat bran, and wheat middlings are commonly used to make up a large part of the ration for starting chicks. At times it may be economical, provided the efficiency of the ration is not less-ened, to substitute oats or wheat for the wheat by-products and, in some cases, for a part or all of the corn. Increasing facilities for grinding grains on the farm are making it practical in many cases for farmers to use ground grains rather than grain by-products in their poultry rations. In order to obtain information on the relative value of wheat and oats as a substitute for wheat bran and wheat middlings as well as a substitute for corn in rations for starting chicks a number of experiments have been conducted at this Station. This paper gives the results of trials in which ground oats were substituted for wheat bran and wheat middlings.
