Abstract

The term magnetospheric substorm was coined sometime in 1967 to describe the explosive dissipation of energy at high latitudes with auroral breakups. This made it possible to understand that the many modes of energy dissipation (e.g. VLF, ELF, ULF, current flow, etc.) really represent one phenomenon and allowed the study of substorms to progress through the understanding of the relationships among these various modes of energy dissipation.
