Abstract

The results of ground-based spectrophotometry of the comet P/Giacobini-Zinner (1984e) near perihelion and the time of the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) encounter are presented. The authors find that the abundance ratio [H2O+/CO+] is 1.2±0.6 compared with the ICE result of approximately 5. Analysis of the dust production as measured by the optical continuum predicts a dust impact rate on the S antenna of the ICE of ≤0.01 s-1 at closest approach. This upper limits is consistent with the ICE results.
