Abstract

The magnetic excitation spectrum of HoP (flopside spin structure, Tc=5.5 K) has been studied by neutron inelastic scattering. At 1.5 K five spin—wave branches have been found which are almost independent of wave vector. The results are analysed in terms of a single-ion Hamiltonian containing a crystal-field and the effects of bilinear and quadrupolar pair interactions. At U.2 K excitedstate spin waves have been observed which correspond to transitions from the upper member of the ground-state doublet Γ3 (2). The stability of the unusual flopside spin structure is discussed.
