Abstract

With optically detected ESR the ground state of laser-active Tl0(1) centres in six alkali halides was investigated as well as the lowest relaxed excited state in KCl, RbCl, KBr and NaCl. With ENDOR the superhyperfine interactions in the ground state with three groups of neighbour nuclei could be resolved in KCl and RbCl. It is shown that the two lowest-energy absorption bands and the emission band as well as the ESR parameters in ground and excited states in all alkali halides can consistently be explained by a Tl0 atom in the crystal field of the neighbouring anion vacancy. In the relaxed excited state evidence for a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect was found in KCl, RbCl and KBr.
