Abstract

Worldviews influence the whole environment. If one fully espouses standard prescriptions of Gross Domestic Product the inclusion of Gross National Happiness (GNH) values in textbooks would be an anachronism. To integrate GNH values education in schools it is important to understand the value of values education. Values education is focused on the emergence of a set of beliefs and attitudes as a person’s character and personality unfold, so that his or her emergent beliefs will influence his or her behaviour and actions in a particular manner and direction. It is also about the exploration of those common values that will contribute to the creation of a positive future for all. Initially, this process requires the articulation of a set of values and this is followed by the determination of ways of applying them in personal and collective social contexts. Values are an essential component of any discussion about sustainability, especially in an educational frame of reference.
