„Tigellinus, mein Tränenglas!“ rief Peter Ustinov in der Rolle des Kaiser Nero im Monumentalfilm Quo vadis? über den Brand der Stadt Rom im Jahr 64. Das Tränenglas ist zwar eine ironische Erfindung der Neuzeit, Glas aber gab es bereits im alten Rom. Dabei ist es kompliziert herzustellen.
