Abstract

Abstract All of us at some point experience the death of a beloved person. Many of the symptoms that occur around this time are similar to those of depression but the conditions are not the same. In a normal grief reaction, the person feels sad, may have trouble sleeping and may have difficulty carrying out their usual tasks. These symptoms resolve in a few months, as there is a gradual weaning from the remembered experiences of the loved one. The availability of family and close friends can be extremely helpful during this period. This period of grief or mourning is a normal and useful adaptation to the loss of a loved one and should not be discouraged.
