Abstract

ABSTRACT This article examines the Old English poetic formula hyht wæs geniwad (“hope was renewed”) using tools derived from Oral-Formulaic Theory and usage-based linguistics. It suggests that the formula is specifically connected to Resurrection and that it was developed within a small group of closely-related poems, on the basis of an earlier formula expressing overwhelming grief and loss.
