Grief and the Loss of Connection

Abstract

Following Ernest Becker's hypothesis that the essential human need is to deny death, the author posits the corollary loss of connection not only with literal but with symbolic life continuity. Appropriate therapeutic attention, according to the author, converges with the strivings of religion and art.
