Abstract
Fault ride through (FRT) in wind energy conversion systems (WECS) is becoming a very active area of research. This chapter looks at a novel method for achieving FRT for a fully rated back-to-back connected voltage source converter (VSC)-based WECS using Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). In this method, the machine side converter regulates the dc link voltage and the grid side converter takes care of the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). On detection of fault, there is no additional control loops to be brought in and the dc link is seen to be effectively regulated as seen from the results of the simulation done in SIMULINK®MPPT. Performance has also been evaluated and response is found to be fast and accurate.
