Abstract

Two techniques for producing grey scale in a laser-addressed smectic liquid-crystal storage display are described. The performance of the methods are compared at different reduced temperatures with respect to smectic-to-nematic transition in cells with both homogeneous and homeotropic boundary conditions. In a nonoptimized projection system, several highly reproducible grey-scale levels have been displayed.
