Abstract
This article focuses on early photographs, snapshots, picture postcards and watercolours relating to Iran during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This material, which was collected by European entrepreneurs who travelled in Iran on business or for political reasons, is preserved in three archives in Leiden University Library's Eastern Collections. The author seeks to discover what kinds of micro-historic and artistic insights the material can provide concerning the photographers and collectors and with regard to the cultural and photographic histories of Iran at that time. I am grateful to Curator Dr Arnoud Vrolijk and to Former Curator Professor Dr J. J. Witkam for granting me access to Leiden University Library's Eastern Collections.
