Abstract

Guided by the rather suggestive form of the lepton-nucleon structure functions in the parton model we give a generalization of the parton approach to scaling in which the structure functions are statistically averaged temperature-dependent Green's functions of currents. We show that the observed scaling of the structure functions is related to and determined by properties of the hadronic mass spectrum in much the same way as scaling in many-body systems generally is related to the properties of these systems in the region of their critical points.
