Abstract

Sustainability and greening are increasingly gaining acceptance in industry. Societal awareness and media attention keep corporations mindful and the growing cohort of green customers reward the good firms. However, most of this action happens with the larger corporations and well-known brands, while small firms are overlooked. Their small size suggests a negligible environmental impact and helps them evade attention. In India, where over 26 million SMEs operate, the cumulative environmental impact may be much more than the large corporations. During 2013, research was conducted within engineering SMEs in Pune, India, by the author. This article discusses the findings about owner awareness and current green practices in SMEs. Recommendations are made based on interviews with various stakeholders, SME owners, and practices in other countries.
