Greenhouse Gas and Odour Emissions from Land Application of Manure: A Review of Measurement Methods

Abstract

The measurement and analysis of gaseous emissions resulting from the land application of manure is an important piece of the puzzle concerning the impacts of livestock production systems on the environment. Odour, greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions can have a significant effect on the environment and be a nuisance to neighbours. Beneficial management practices such as injection, incorporation or pre-treatment of the manure may help reduce emissions of one type of gaseous emissions but may sometimes result in conditions that increase other types of emissions. The interactions of many factors must be considered when evaluating the emission reduction potential of a specific technology.
