Abstract

The conference ‘Shades of Green - Working Towards Green Tourism in the Countryside’, held in Leeds on 10–12 April 1990, was the first major conference on green tourism in the UK. It was sponsored by the Countryside Commission, English Tourist Board and Rural Development Commission, with the objective of encouraging good practice in rural tourism, which respects and sustains the fabric of environment and community. Bill Bramwell, Senior Lecturer in Tourism at Sheffield City Polytechnic, reports on the differing approaches to green tourism which emerged from the practical case studies discussed at the conference. The full proceedings of the ‘Shades of Green’ Conference, edited by Bill Bramwell, has been published jointly by the Countryside Commission, English Tourist Board and Rural Development Commission.
