Abstract

Agricultural waste is readily available in large quantities, and show great potential for preparation of adsorption materials. In this work, we report a green method to synthesize an effective loofah fiber-based adsorbent for methylene blue (MB) with fast adsorption rate. Loofah fiber-graft-polyacrylic acid (LF-g-PAA) composite is synthesized by using hydroxyl radicals (OH) produced on the surface of LF by improved Fenton’s reagent (LF-loaded Fe2+/H2O2) to initiate surface grafting polymerization at room temperature. The proposed green synthesized adsorbent (LF-g-PAA) exhibits few self-polymer as compared to that conventional synthetic adsorbents (Fenton’s reagent and ceric ions initiator synthesis) for adsorptive applications. The removal efficiency of MB can reach about 67% within the first 3 min and the maximum removal efficiency can reach 99%.
