Abstract

De-licensing in 1991 put the Indian automobile industry on a growth trajectory and attracted foreign manufacturers to set up production facilities in India. However, rapid growth in this sector is threatening the environment and impacting supply chain operations. This study explores green supply chain management (GSCM) in the Indian automobile sector and addresses the question, 'What drivers can sustain GSCM for automobile companies in India?' Published GSCM articles are reviewed followed by an analysis to validate the variables thus identified. Factors for building a sustainable green supply chain in the context of the Indian automobile industry are identified.
