Abstract
This work deals with the extraction of mangiferin from the Mangifera indica leaves using water as a solvent for the first time making it more economical than other extraction methods studied till date. The effect of various extraction methods like microwave assisted extraction, sequential batch extraction has been performed and optimized. Effect of microwave irradiation time, solute to solvent ratio, microwave power, and soaking time on the yield of targeted component was studied and optimized. The maximum extraction yield of 55 mg/g was obtained at optimum microwave assisted extraction conditions like water as an extracting solvent, extraction time 5 min, solid to solvent ratio 1:20 and microwave power of 272 W. The extraction yield obtained with microwave was compared with the sequential batch extraction and soxhlet extraction. It is found that microwave increased the yield of extraction in a short span of time and also reduced the solvent requirement as compared to the conventional methods.
