Abstract
The ecology movement has entered into politics with a new model of party mobilization. Nurtured in small grass-roots activist groups, greens who have formed parties have continued to practise their radically democratic mode of organization. They have held steadfastly to their ethic of civic activism and individual autonomy in politics even while competing with the mainstream parties. Remarkably, the experiment yielded positive political benefits for France’s first significant ecological party, Les Verts. But mobilization with the direct democratic model of organization has been difficult to sustain.2
