Green Development Practice of Iron & Steel Industry in Chungcheongnam-do of South Korea

Abstract

As one of the traditional pillar industries, iron and steel industry provides strong support for the development of national economy. As a big consumer of resources and energy, iron and steel enterprises are facing great pressure of environmental protection. This paper mainly introduces the ecological layout of steel industry and the green development cases of typical steel enterprises in the Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea, and puts forward the future development goals of urban-friendly steel enterprises.This paper maily introduces the ecological layout of iron and steel industry in Chungcheongnam-do area as well as the typical cases of ecological development of iron and steel enterprise. Chungcheongnam-do is located in the west of Korea, near the West coast, and borders the capital circle and the central region. The iron and steel enterprises of Chungcheongnam-do are mainly concentrated in Dangjin area. Hyundai Steel Co., Ltd is the leading iron and steel enterprise in Chungcheongnam-do area and it is also the second largest iron and steel enterprise in South Korea. Positive Effect has been achieved by means of building environmental protection plant area, comprehensively carrying out "three wastes" treatment, waste heat utilization and developing renewable energy. Its practical experience also provides reference for the urban iron and steel enterprises to develop in a sustainable way.
