Abstract
Many famous en less famous myths and historic events from Greek antiquity painted by Dutch and Flemish artists from the 16th and 17th century. For the first time a broad selection of paintings and prints with subjects from Greek mythology and history are exposed. Famous painters like Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, Jan Steen and Brueghel are represented by important paintings from major museums and private collections from all over the world.The catalogue section contains full colour illustrations of all of the 86 paintings. In addition, the stories shown in the paintings are elaborated upon.The exhibition Greek Gods and Heroes in the Age of Rubens and Rembrandt will be on view in the Dordrechts Museum from 4 February until 6 May 2001The first part of the abundantly illustrated catalogue contains seven essays by prominent authors, Dr. Eric Jan Sluijter, Dr. Eric M. Moormann and Prof.dr. Ilja M. Veldman amongst others. The essays vary from specialist studies of the mythological oeuvre of Rubens and Rembrandt to general observations about mythology in Dutch painting and printmaking.
