Abstract
The entry provides some general statistics about the number of museums and their visitors in Greece. It then examines the development of the idea of the museum from antiquity to modern times, focusing mainly in the nineteenth century, when the modern Greek state was founded. The first museums in Greece were associated from their beginnings with the strengthening of national identity and its links with ancient Greece, while they had a public mission and a strong educational character. In modern times the Greek museum scene shows an increasing interest in current museological concerns and practices. The entry covers in greater detail the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the National Gallery-Museum of Alexandros Soutsos, and the Benaki Museum
