Abstract

Abstract The paper discusses the principal climatic and geological features influencing the design and manufacture of the large (1.6 to 4m) prestressed concrete cylinder pipes used in the 1900 km of the wellfield collector and main conveyance lines of Phase I of the Libyan Great Man-Made River Project. Pipe design and manufacturing processes are outlined and the winning and processing of aggregates are discussed. Particular reference is made to the extremely aggressive climatic and geological conditions and to the methods employed to overcome them successfully.
