Abstract

The Wright Brothers, as they are usually collectively known, could not have realised the transport revolution they would cause when, early in the Twentieth Century, they put bicycle-making to one side and took up constructing aircraft instead. The hard-working duo, from the state of Ohio in the USA, are the third in this series featuring the contribution made to our everyday lives by groundbreaking inventors. The hands-on activities described are largely cross-curricular in nature, involving elements of science, mathematics and design technology, as well as history. Throughout, children should be encouraged to work cooperatively, sharing ideas, practising skills and testing out possible solutions.
