Abstract
SLEEP SPECIALISTS, members of patient support groups, and others representing more than 65 organizations in the sleep community gathered for a rally at the US Capitol in May before spreading out to lobby their respective state legislators. Participants in the Great American Sleepwalk asked that funds be designated and a full-time director appointed for the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (NCSDR), created by Congress in 1993 as part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In accepting an award for her father, Sen Mark O. Hatfield (R, Ore) from the American Sleep Disorders Association (ASDA) for his support for the field, Elizabeth Hatfield-Keller, MD, a resident in emergency medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, noted that another resident at her medical center had been seriously injured after falling asleep at the wheel on his way home from a night on call.
