Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the performance characteristics of a journal bearing with three-dimensional asperities operating in a turbulent regime. To model the turbulence, the linearized lubrication theory of Ng and Pan (J. Basic Eng. (1965) 675–688) is used. The profile of the three-dimensional asperities is modelled in both x and y directions. Numerical simulation results indicate that for bearings of the same load carrying capacity, a longitudinal roughness pattern consumes more power than an isotropic or transverse roughness pattern.
