Abstract

The first 1005 gamma‐ray bursts (GRBs) observed by BATSE have no significant dipole nor quadrupole moment and a marked deficiency of faint bursts. The deficiency of faint bursts indicates that BATSE is observing the edge of the GRB distribution while the lack of a dipole moment implies that the earth has at most a small offset from the center of the distribution. Possible distributions are sources located at cosmological distances or in a very extended Galactic halo. We use the observational limits on the dipole and quadrupole moments to place limits on simple halo models and to quantitatively test published high‐velocity neutron star (HVNS) halo models.
