Abstract

AT a discussion meeting (entitled “Evolution of the Precambrian Crust”) held at the Royal Society of London, in March 1972, the relationship between ancient cratons and their bordering erogenic belts was discussed in some detail. Particular reference was made to the erogenic belts of Eastern and Southern Africa. For several reasons, the boundaries between the cratons and the orogenic belts are not well defined. This is usually because of lack of detailed ground mapping, the presence of a transition zone between the craton and the orogenic belt, and because of later sedimentary cover.
