Abstract

As part of a hydrologic study, gravity anomalies over the Albuquerque basin were modeled to determine the thickness of the low‐density Neogene basin deposits, the major aquifer of the basin. The models are constrained by substantial density log and well data. Fifteen two‐dimensional (2-D) models include four major density units. The upper unit (density [Formula: see text]) corresponds to the Neogene syn‐rifting deposits. Thickness of this unit averages about 1.5 km and exceeds 2.0 km in a strip along the east side of the basin. The thickness is about 1.0 km between the Albuquerque and the Santo Domingo basins. At the south end of the Albuquerque basin, the thickness is less than 0.5 km. The configuration of the remaining density units, less constrained by well data, raises significant questions about the history of the basin that cannot be answered with existing data.
