Abstract

Near the town Handlova, the geologic-geomorphological development resulted in a typical slope deformation structure. Hard and rigid volcanic rocks rest upon plastic Palaeogene and Neogene clayey rocks. The block type deformations like block rifts, block fields and areal landslides are predominant, flow slides are less frequent. Block deformations are controlled by tectonics (association with elevation structures). Landslides are mostly controlled by physical-mechanical properties of clayey rock. They are favoured by hydrogeological conditions and by climatic factors. Some landslides are activated by undermining of slopes. Protective operations mostly comprise drainage, anchors, piles, and stabilizing embankments.
