Abstract

I would like someone out there to answer a couple of questions for me. Be honest. Do you have too much time on your hands in the wards? Are you standing around twiddling your thumbs? I'm guessing the answer is no to both questions. Then why has the Government decided to impose a new duty on you, that of the Dignity Nurse? Interestingly, the definition for dignity is: a formal, stately or grave bearing, or a sense of self importance (Collins English Dictionary, 2005). I'm just curious how these definitions fit in with the other expected duties of nurses, namely caring, kind, approachable, friendly. I personally would prefer not to have a self-important nurse watching out for me.
