Abstract

Abstract The breeding and development of ‘Grasslands Moata’ tetraploid Italian ryegrass are described, and results are presented of spaced plant, mowing, and grazing evaluations conducted by Grasslands Division at Palmerston North and at regional stations. Comparisons with ‘Grasslands Tama’ Westerwolds ryegrass have shown similar production in both winter and spring, but Moata was superior during the following seasons and in annual production, owing to its greater persistence. Moata production was superior to that of ‘Grasslands Paroa’ Italian ryegrass during the first winter, and equal during the remaining seasons. Moata and Tama were found to be similar in feed value.
