Abstract

Summary In recent years educational legislation has led to the introduction of new local policy and monitoring procedures within LEAs and schools. Nationally, the 1996 Education Act and the 1994 SEN Code of Practice describe the respective responsibilities of schools and LEAs for pupils with special educational needs (SEN). Locally in Islington in 1994, the District Audit highlighted the need for improved monitoring of the SEN budget. Islington's response to the legislation and the District Audit has included the establishment of two additional EP/LEA Officer posts within the Educational Psychology Service (EPS) to monitor and evaluate the progress made by students whose funding has been allocated to schools via their statements of SEN.
