There are more structural and thematic affinities between Restoration rhymed heroic drama and comedy of wit than most critics have been willing to recognize, a fact that warrants a march into their common territory. I Their differences, traditionally separating them as ideal and realistic respectively, were wryly exaggerated by Wycherley himself. He puts into the mouth of The Plain Dealer's critic of fashion, Novel, an appropriately fashionable (for the year 1676) denigration of the heroic play: but what think you, Mr. Novel, of [The Country Wife]? Olivia asks, Though I know you are a friend to all that are new.
