Abstract

In this study, graphite-supported CuO nanoparticles (GrC) were synthesized by the precipitation method and their characteristics were determined by X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller. The catalytic activity of GrC was evaluated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for Direct Orange 26 (DO26) removal. The effects of pH, PMS dosage, GrC loading, reaction time and temperature were investigated. The complete decolorization occurred under the conditions of pH 7.0, 3 mM PMS, 0.15 g/L GrC and 60 min reaction time. GrC catalyst exhibited a better performance in decolorization of DO26 and PMS decomposition compared to CuO, Cu2+ and Gr. The reusability and stability of GrC was evaluated and their results showed that GrC can be used for four cycling runs. Saline water showed a strong inhibitory effect in the PMS/GrC system compared to grey water and tap water. TOC and COD removals were 25.2 and 32.6% for the PMS/GrC system. The scavenging experiment indicated that the sulfate radical was mainly responsible for the dye degradation.
