Abstract

Graphite is a stable structure which does not possess an energy gap at the Fermi level. However, the crystal orbitals of each monolayer remain similar to the benzene molecular orbitals. Different parts of the Brillouin zone take into account either the stability or the reactivity of the compound. The ..pi.. system would be stabilized by a Kekule distortion which would open a gap. The sigma system forbids this distortion.
