Abstract

Abstract Membranes with graphene are the best concept and researchers are working on it to get enhanced results in membrane science and technology. Graphene-based membranes or the thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes prepared by incorporating graphene oxide (GO) plays a vital role in the membrane technology. In all types of separation either gas or liquid, researchers are using graphene oxide to achieve the high selectivity/separation factor and to enhance the permeability. GO, a two-dimensional material has been considered as a promising material for water purification and also for gas separation. In both applications (water and gas) GO plays an excellent role in enhancing TFN membrane performance. To improve the membrane desalination technology and waste water treatment technology nowadays GO is playing a great role due to it's high surface area and strong mechanical strength. In this book chapter, we discussed the synthesis and different applications of GO based TFN membranes in diverse fields. Also, we explained the various synthesis methods and coating technology for the preparation of GO based TFN membranes. The role and mechanism of GO based membranes are well explained in this book chapter.
