Abstract

124 cases of otitis externa with reactive granuloma formation at the cartilaginous part of the external canal are described. This form of otitis externa is common in this part of India, where the climate is very hot and humid and the incidence is found to be more during the humid months of the year. This is different from diffuse otitis externa which has received various nomenclature such as “Singapore Ear”, “Hongkong Ear”, “Tropical Ear” etc. Other uncommon granulomatous diseases of the ear such as eosinophilic granuloma, Necrotising otitis externa, Hans Schuller’s disease, etc are excluded. The disease is common in children and young adults. Details of symptomatology, clinical presentation, bacteriological and therapeutic observations are described. The reactive origin of the granulation tissue formation is discussed and analysed. Different exciting, aggravating and precipitating factors in the formation of granulomatous tissue in this form of otitis externa are also discussed.
