Abstract

To the Editor: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a refractory disease characterized by chronic, systemic, and progressive arthritis. RA patients often have leg ulcers caused by rheumatoid vasculitis. Cytokines including interleukin (IL)-1, IL-2, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor–α, interferon-γ, and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor are produced by granulocytes of RA patients.1 Granulocyte and monocyte adsorption apheresis (GCAP), first employed to treat ulcerative colitis,2 uses a column containing cellulose acetate beads to remove pathogenic granulocytes and monocytes extracorporeally.
