Abstract

An algorithm for the modeling of some situations arising in the study of granular materials is presented. It is based on a set of geometrical rules that replace the physics of the system with a discrete function, prescribing the stability state of each particle, and evolution rules that govern the interaction between neighbouring particles. The formation of a heap of granular material, the occurrence of avalanches and the segregation of particles of different sizes in a container subject to shaking, were studied using the present methodology.
