Abstract
About 4% of the National Science Foundation's total Research Experiences for Undergraduates awards went to the geosciences or related fields. The annually awarded grants are aimed at encouraging students to choose careers in mathematics, science, and engineering. Special emphasis is on providing research participation opportunities for women, minorities, and the physically disabled.Erich Bloch, director of the NSF, noted that “Talented undergraduate students should be stimulated to choose research and teaching careers in science, mathematics, and engineering. We at NSF hope that actual participation in research projects, and exposure to the excitement, problems, and challenges of research will encourage this interest.”
