Abstract

Ultrasound studies of the urogenital system are of increased interest in the medical community. The editors of this book have managed to prepare a well timed work that presents the current practices in the clinical application of ultrasound in uroradiology. To fully appreciate the present book, one has to understand the history of the use of ultrasound in the medical field. In the early 1980s, the application of renal ultrasound was popularized to evaluate especially the dilation of the upper urinary tract, whereas transrectal ultrasound was mainly conducted to study the different prostate conditions. At that time, the involvement of both radiologists and urologists was witnessed based on each other’s expertise and available equipment. Urologists became the main investigators of the prostate, and radiologists became experts in renal ultrasound imaging. The power of ultrasound imaging of the urogenital system, however, is based on the collaboration of both specialties. This point is nicely illustrated and confirmed in the present work.
