Abstract

The article informs that researchers are developing robotic helpers that can better read and react to social signals. Topics discussed include invention of Multi-Purpose Eldercare Robot Assistant (MERA), a customized version of the Pepper robot developed by SoftBank Robotics in Japan, efforts of roboticist Maja Mataric and her colleagues to develop social machines, and need for more socially assistive robots due to shortage of human companions for the elderly.
