Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focuses on thirty grandfathers who are serving prison sentences for sexually abusing forty-four of their grandchildren. The few prior studies that have assessed this type of incest have reported inconsistent results concerning the seriousness of the sexual abuse. Through available quantitative and qualitative data, this research summarizes in detail the offending behavior of these inmates. The results indicate that at least for this group of incest perpetrators, the types of sexual abuse are serious and often accompanied by physical force or threats. Also considered are the backgrounds of the grandfathers, characteristics of the victims, the abuse situation, and how and to whom the abuse was reported The data are analyzed in order to provide as much information as possible about this little understood but important topic.
