Abstract

(1) it is his definitive statement of ecologicalevolutionary theory (hereafter EET); (2) it provides several empirical applications of the theory; (3) it is a critique of American sociology; and (4) it is a slice of intellectual autobiography. Many sociologists, including this reviewer, owe a debt to Lenski for his inspiration to study long-term social change. His work is a major reason evolutionary theory is alive and kicking (cf. Chirot 2005). It is also an effort to help sociology remain true to its name: the study of societies.
