Abstract
AbstractThis article examines the relation between grammaticalisation and generative grammar. It describes the generative attitude towards historical linguistics in general and then to grammaticalisation in particular and describes what the locus of change is in a generative model. It reviews some early work on historical linguistics within generative grammar. It concludes that the child's innate principles are in fact responsible for grammaticalisation and that generative grammar can therefore gain much insight from grammaticalisation processes.
